For a long time, the only way I wanted to be a “hidden gem” was to stay hidden.
When you’re in the thick of a bottle-a-day habit, visibility is the enemy. You spend your life trying to be a ghost. You hide the empties at the bottom of the bin; you hide the shakes during the morning meeting; you hide the truth from the people who love you most. You want to stay in the shadows because, in the shadows, nobody can see the cracks in your swing.
So, when VoyageJacksonville reached out to feature me and Skull & Bogeys in their “Hidden Gems” series, my first instinct was that old, familiar flinch. “Who, me? You sure you want to see what’s under the hood?”
But sobriety has a funny way of turning your world inside out. It demands that you step onto the tee box, right in front of the gallery, and own every bit of your game—the pure strikes and the shanks alike.
The Voyage to the Surface
The interview (which you can read here) covers the “what” of Skull & Bogeys—how we’re merging streetwear grit with the precision of the green. But if you’ve been following this blog, you know the “why” and what we really see as our hidden gem.
Skull & Bogeys wasn’t born in a boardroom; it was born in the dirt of a rock bottom. It was built for the guys and gals who know that golf is a lot like recovery: it’s a game of inches, it’s frustrating as hell, and the moment you think you’ve mastered it, it puts you back in your place.
Being featured as a “Hidden Gem” in the Jacksonville community is an honor, but it’s also a reminder. A “gem” only gets its shine because it’s been subjected to an ungodly amount of pressure and heat. It’s been ground down. It’s been buried.
If you’re struggling right now—if you’re in those early, dark days of putting the glass down—you might feel buried. But in this brand, we don’t see “buried” as the end. We see it as the beginning of the polish.
Grit, Jacksonville, and the Path Ahead
Jacksonville is a golf town, but it’s also a town that respects a comeback story. We’re based here because the salt and the sun match our aesthetic—raw, real, and a little bit weathered.
In the VoyageJacksonville piece, I talk about the challenges of building a brand that refuses to play by the “country club” rules. We lean into the Skull because it’s a memento mori—a reminder that our time is a hidden gem indeed and ultimately finite, so we might as well be honest. We lean into the Bogey because it’s the honest score of a man who fought for his par and missed, but stayed in the game.
Our partnership with NamaStay Sober and our mission to support the recovery community isn’t a “marketing angle.” It’s the heartbeat of the company. Every time someone sees that skull on a hat and asks what it means, we get to have a conversation about resilience. We get to talk about the fact that you can be a “rebel soul” and still be a “master of the green.”

The 19th Hole Reflection
I’m grateful for the spotlight, not because I need the applause, but because every time the Skull & Bogeys story is told, it might reach one person who thinks their “hidden” struggles are too much to overcome.
If you’re reading the interview, I hope you don’t just see a “golf company.” I hope you see a guy who decided that the shadows were no longer a place to hide, but a place to build.
We aren’t just selling mock necks and hoodies. We’re building an inner circle for the Quartermasters of the world—the ones who know that the real “hidden gems” aren’t the ones on the jewelry store shelf. They’re the ones currently in the sand trap, figuring out how to save their round.
Check out the feature, keep your head down, and stay in the box. The view from the fairway is a lot better when you aren’t hiding.
