In the early days of my drinking—and, frankly, in the early days of my sobriety—I was a world-class people-pleaser. I didn’t realize it at the time; I thought I was just being “a good guy.” I spent an exhausting amount of mental energy trying to anticipate how everyone else would react to what I said, what I did, and especially what I didn’t do.
On the golf course, this looked like a nightmare. If I gave a playing partner a piece of advice (even if they asked for it) and they caught an attitude, I’d spend the next six holes trying to “fix” the vibe. I’d over-explain, I’d apologize for being right, and I’d basically play like garbage because I was too busy managing their emotions to focus on my own ball.
I was working a full-time job that I never applied for: Manager of Other People’s Mercurial Relationship with Criticism.
And today? I’m turning in my resignation.
The Hazard of the “Glass Ego”
We’ve all played a round with the guy whose mood is a weather event. One minute he’s fine; the next, you make a tiny observation about his grip or—God forbid—point out a clear rules violation, and the “Spirits” of rage take over. He shuts down. He gets passive-aggressive. He makes it your problem that he can’t handle the truth.
In recovery, this is a deadly game.
Honesty is the only club we have that actually works. But when you’re dealing with someone who has a mercurial relationship with criticism, you find yourself “walking on eggshells” (a classic sign of a toxic hazard). You start lying or softening the truth just to keep their peace.
Here’s the hard truth: If I have to lie to you to keep you stable, I’m not helping you; I’m enabling your “Old Self” to stay in the driver’s seat.
Resigning from the Performance
At Skull & Bogeys, we talk about the “Gallery”—that imaginary crowd we perform for. Managing other people’s reactions to criticism is just another form of playing for the gallery. It’s an attempt to control an outcome that isn’t ours to control.
The Skull on our gear is a memento mori. It’s a reminder that my time is limited. I do not have enough minutes left on this earth to curate my truth so that it doesn’t bruise your ego.
- My Job: To be honest, to be fair, and to deliver the truth with “Grit and Grace.”
- Your Job: To decide what to do with that truth.
If you take a piece of valid criticism and turn it into a three-act drama, that is your “blow-up hole,” not mine. I’m not going into the woods to find your ball anymore.
The Freedom of the Fairway
There is a massive amount of power in the sentence: “That’s not my business.”
When you stop trying to manage the mercurial moods of the people around you, your “Short Game” improves instantly. Why? Because the mental static disappears. You stop “over-swinging” in conversations. You stop apologizing for having boundaries.
In sobriety, this is called Detachment with Love. I can care about you, I can want the best for your game, and I can tell you the truth—but I am not responsible for the emotional tantrum you throw when you hear it.
The Quartermaster Mindset
As a Quartermaster in our community, you are a leader. And leaders don’t have time to coddle the “Spirits” of other people’s insecurity.
We wear the Black Flag because we fly the colors of reality. Reality is often sharp. It often hurts. But it’s the only thing that actually gets us to the Zenith.
If someone in your life is making it “your job” to manage their fragile ego, it’s time to take the drop. Take the penalty stroke of their temporary disapproval and move your ball to a place where you can actually play.
The truth is the truth. What they do with it is between them and the scoreboard.
