The Sound of the Strike

sound of the strike

Are You Making Noise or Making a Point?

There is a specific guy at every driving range. You know him. He’s got the $600 driver, the neon-orange shoes, and a swing that sounds like a car crash in a silverware factory. Every shot is accompanied by a grunt, a curse word, or a loud play-by-play for his “gallery.”

sound of the strike

He’s making a lot of noise. But if you look at his target, there’s nothing there. The balls are scattered like buckshot, and his scorecard is a disaster.

In my drinking years, I was that guy—minus the golf clubs. I was a walking, talking megaphone of chaos. My life was constant static: the loud arguments, the “big ideas” I never followed through on, the dramatic apologies, and the high-decibel crashing of my own consequences. I thought being “loud” was the same thing as being “important.” I thought if I made enough noise, people wouldn’t notice that I didn’t actually have a message.

The Static of the Bottle

Addiction is a loud disease. It’s a riot in your skull that never shuts up. When I was using, I used that noise to drown out the silence of my own empty life. I’d walk into a room and try to suck all the oxygen out of it, making sure everyone heard my story, my jokes, and my drama.

But here’s the thing about noise: It’s cheap. Anyone can scream. Anyone can slam a club. Anyone can cause a scene. Anyone can wear neon tie-dye golf polos with reflective accents (no judgement: I have some). But when the dust settles and the echo dies down, what’s left? Usually, it’s just a headache and a lot of bridges burned to the ground.

When I got sober, the world suddenly got very quiet. For the first time, I couldn’t hide behind the volume. I had to ask myself a terrifying question: “Now that I’ve stopped shouting, do I actually have anything to say?”

The Pure Strike

In golf, the most beautiful sound isn’t the “ping” of a titanium driver or the “thud” of a ball landing softly on a green. It’s the sound of a pure strike.

It’s that muted, solid “click” when the center of the face meets the center of the ball. It’s not loud. In fact, it’s almost quiet – a deep resonance rather than a sharp pierce. But that sound tells everyone on the course everything they need to know. It says you have control. It says you have discipline. It says you have a target, and you hit it.

At Skull & Bogeys, we talk about the “Grit” and the “Skull.” To an outsider, our brand might look like “noise.” It’s edgy, it’s dark, and it’s different from the country club “standard.” But look closer.

The skull isn’t just an edgy graphic; it’s a message. It’s the memento mori—the quiet, heavy reminder that our time is finite. The gear is the “noise” that gets you noticed, but the way you carry yourself is the “sound” that makes people listen.

What Is Your Life Saying?

Now that the static of the alcohol is gone, I have to be intentional about the sound I’m making.

  • Am I still just making noise? (Complaining about my bogeys, seeking attention for my sobriety, or playing the “hero”?)
  • Or am I making a point? (Staying calm when the round goes south, being present for my family, and letting my actions do the talking?)

You can always make noise. You can buy the flashiest gear, shout the loudest at the bar, and live a life of high-volume drama. But eventually, the gallery stops looking. They get bored with the static.

The world listens to the pure strike. They listen to the guy who has been through the fire and came out with a quiet, steady resolve. They listen to the person who knows that a well-played bogey is worth more than a loud, lying birdie.

Check Your Frequency

Next time you’re on the tee, or next time you’re facing a “hazard” in your personal life, check your volume.

Are you reacting with noise? Or are you responding with substance?

The goal of this brand—and this life—isn’t to be the loudest person in the clubhouse. It’s to be the person whose character makes a sound so solid, so pure, and so honest that people can’t help but stop and listen.

Stop the static. Find the center of the face. Let them hear the truth.
